An Introduction to Spotlight on Diversity Champions

'Spotlight on Diversity Champions' will provide Q&A pieces from diversity champions, thought pieces on the current state of the industry and commentary articles of women working in the industry.

As the producer of Women in Construction Summit, the initial research phase was crucial to developing our understanding of the industry’s position on diversity and inclusion – from the tradeswomen to the C-suite level executives. Unfortunately, it was unpleasant but not at all surprising to confirm that currently the industry is perceived as all males in hi-vis and Timberland boots.

Women currently make up only 11% of the construction industry (The Smith Institute, 2016), which is one of the UK’s biggest pillars and contributions to the economy. When you look at the diversity statistics of tradesmen and tradeswomen, unfortunately, it gets even bleaker, with only 1% of on-site workers being female (The Smith Institute, 2016). There are many reasons why the numbers are the way they are, from the current industry image that excludes women, to the lack of career development and training.

'Spotlight on Diversity Champions' is a blog series where we share insight and celebrate the successful leaders and women who are championing for diversity.

Throughout challenges, misconceptions and ridiculous stereotypes, there are women who are standing strong and paving the way for the next generation of female leaders. I think it’s important to share different understandings of diversity from different viewpoints to create a worthy discussion on how we can move forward.

'Spotlight on Diversity Champions' will provide Q&A pieces from diversity champions, thought pieces on the current state of the industry and commentary articles of women working in the industry.
