Realities of Creating a New Normal: An Introduction

As the Lead Producer for the Women in Construction World Series, the past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind, in so many different aspects. With our flagship event, Women in Construction Summit in London being postponed and our American sisters being in lockdown, I’ve been mulling over so many thoughts on how we can effectively support our growing community now that we’re all facing new challenges as a result of COVID-19.

The global public health crisis is hitting us in so many ways we couldn’t have even imagine, the next couple of months and what will occur lies in the unknown. We’ve all seen the negative impacts this is having across society, from the deaths, to the supermarket craziness, and of course, the lockdown. And we’re just starting to understand and see how we can all come together to recover and thrive in these uncertain times.

As we just begin our journey now, we need to all come together - more than ever -to share what we are learning and to open our minds to those that are not as fortunate as us in this pandemic. This is a moment for stillness, innovation and creativity. This is a moment to improve our communication with our colleagues, family, friends and neighbours. This a time to stop, be present and recreate what we thought our future was.

'Realities of Creating a New Normal' will provide insightful pieces from the construction community sharing industry best practice, innovative working methods as well as personal stories highlighting tactics to ensure you don’t lose yourself.

A variety of perspectives, understandings and visions will be shared through this blog series, some of the topics include (but aren't limited to):

Working from Home

Examples include:

  • New working methods
  • Balancing your children with work
  • Being productive at home

Impact of COVID-19 on Construction

Examples include:

  • Approaching “contract changes” in times of uncertainty
  • Managing furlough with your team
  • VR / AR Adoption

Lockdown

Examples include:

  • Staying Healthy: Mind & Body
  • Staying Sane in Self-Isolation
  • Stay Ahead by Staying In Touch

We are looking for contributors to share their perspective and insight with our growing community.

This is the first time for a lot of us where we are dealing with a global pandemic, but this also highlights the need for us to come together as a community. This will be a mournful time to look back in history, but we should also hope to see the growth, the lessons learnt on how we turned it all around, for the better.
