The industry’s approach to EDI isn’t working.
It’s time to rethink and reconstruct. How many decades have we been talking about gender balance in construction? How much time, money and effort have we invested in ‘inclusive leadership’ programmes and EDI initiatives? What has COVID-19 revealed about how much we truly value EDI in this industry? What will it take to truly get equality? We need to start asking ourselves challenging questions about the way we are dealing with inequality in construction. If you are tired of tiptoeing around the edges of org change, frustrated with the ‘fix women to fit’ development programmes or have been told countless times that ‘this is just what the industry is like’ – then this session is for you.

The construction industry is facing a huge problem; at the rate we are currently building we cannot keep up with government projected requirements. The pressure is rightly on to build more efficiently, producing less waste, and creating buildings with a lower carbon footprint. The answer cannot be ‘business as usual’. To get a different answer to the question that has been asked for centuries you need a different group of minds. In this talk Emily will explore the importance of diversity, in all senses of the word, in construction companies and how the industry needs to change to achieve this. Emily will touch upon Modern Methods of Construction, the importance of wellbeing and flexible working, and the importance of recognising the asset of wider experience for an efficient, high performing company to succeed and respond to the challenges we are currently facing.

The first half of 2020 has had lots to tell us - but are we listening? The first half of 2020 has had lots to tell us - but are we listening? Wildfires in Australia, locust infestation in East Africa; drought and famine in southern Africa, and windstorms in Europe, all in the run-up to a global pandemic that has paralysed cities throughout the world.
Now more than ever our interconnectedness is undeniable and it is clear that only through working together can we re-build a new better normal. The construction industry has a pivotal role to play. It sits at the heart of the problem, itself contributing 40% to the UK’s carbon emissions. However, is there the potential to leverage the fast-growing digital technologies to reverse the damage to the climate and progress towards a dynamic equilibrium between the built and natural environments?

I am an engineer, a painter, a woman with a vision, chair of CIBSE UAE Chapter, I head up Innovation for the Middle East for Buro Happold, and a mother of a toddler
Having worked in the industry for 15 years, on four different continents, and now being a mother of a 20-month-old little human being, I have long relationships with my projects than my own child. I decided to return to work 4.5 months after birth in a full-time role as a Team leader, to run some of the most challenging projects in the history of the Middle East. It was the decision I made for myself and my child and through this, I created my own definition of success.
In this session, I will be drawing from my own experience of managing a career, my mental health, and a toddler, as well as succeeding, rising, and thriving! This is a Career Surgery session focused on pragmatic lessons learned from my own experience. I am not a career coach, but I coached my own career.

What we now need to do is to focus on practically how do we make it work in a way that is right for the individual (recognising that everyone’s circumstances and needs are different) and assists organisations to drive performance and profitability.
To drive this forward successfully we believe there is a need to focus specifically on four things:
We will debate and discuss these four key elements and how they contribute to delivering successful agile and flexible working approach for any business.

There are dozens of roles within the industry, from specialised professionals such as engineers to those with a transferable skill set. If you are an architect or a project manager, it's crucial to understand your current approaches to working to assess where you need further development. The industry has a nature to fall into the "Waterfall", which is one of the more traditional approaches to working, which has its own benefits but also has the dangers of working in silos. In this session, hear about new methods of approaches to an old system. Mace, a global consultancy and construction firm, has launched a next-generation construction method transforming how we build in the UK: High Rise Solutions (HRS). With the launch of Mace Tech, teams are able to reduce design and construction programmes by 25%, vehicle movements by 40% and waste by 70%. “Availability of smart data is essential to radically change our industry. Mace Tech will allow us to harness the latest digital technologies and offsite construction methods to create better buildings.”

The construction industry is implementing technology and digitisation at a fast pace but often on an ad hoc basis. The legal community are lagging behind in their understanding – try asking a lawyer what ‘BIM’ means - leading to vague or confusing documentation, whilst parties’ understanding of terminology, requirements and processes varies widely. All of this is leading to misunderstandings, differing expectations and potential disputes.
